Musicians and Choices in 2010 and beyond.....

I POST this to you - my friend - because we do need the help of a friend when tough times come, and need to be a hand of help to those in need when we are doing well.

DISCLAIMER - I  make no statement of judgment.. I simply felt the need to throw this topic out for discussion amongst friends, mostly musicians. I know many of you are already implementing together thinking!I like the example at the bottom!

We are better together!

There might be times we can fly solo and not feel the need of others but those times are often short lived due to the fact we were designed to need each other!

We are better together!

We each have skills and abilities that are given for two primary reasons. The obvious reason is to live and support our families. The other is often missed or forgotten. We are blessed to be a blessing. There are times in every life that  we need to give a little away! The balance of these is very personal but the truth is; your gifts are as much for your enjoyment as the are for others benefit.

The world has changed and musicians are living in an all time tsunami of life disaster. There is no need to elaborate this fact. We know basic survival has been challenged and 2 options lay before us.

Do we bunker in, take all we can, leverage, fight, and conquer, hoping to land out in front of our peers thanks to our incredible prowess? OR, do we huddle together, help each other, and work together to stay alive? I see both world views in play. It appears many are kicking into extreme selfish mode in the name of Survival. After all - "Survival of the Fittest" RIGHT??

Might I suggest - Survival of the fittest can net real gain but is guaranteed to reduce the longevity of those gains.

Whereas group effort has the potential to last beyond the group life and exceed all expectations when factoring in collective energies, creativity and often unknown abilities each member will bring to the table.

I recently read an article that challenged the 'seasons' thought and introduced the picture of 2 train tracks - both good and bad is often going on at the same time. Seasons thinking might lead one to wait until everything is cool before lending a hand. I know my world is tough right now but I also know people worse off than me I have living on my couch right now. While it is true I need income, I also help on projects doing spec time and freebies when I can. Working to help others is not conditioned on my success but more on my availability and willingness to help.

The only thing more odd than reading these words from a sax player might be seeing them exemplified in nature, by Geese.

Please read on and learn from our flying friends.........

Lessons from Geese

by Milton Olson adapted by Angeles Arrien

Fact 1

As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Fact 2

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

Lesson

If we have as much sense as a goose we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Fact 3

When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position.

Lesson

It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

Fact 4

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Lesson

We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.

Fact 5

When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Lesson

If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.
