Celebrate America 2008
Just a note to say I love Virgina!!
Wonderful people, green everywhere, beauty speaks of God's country and that's right where I am tonight. We had rehearsal today for the big Independence Day party Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church throws every year this time.
I flew out yesterday and didn't get to my hotel until midnight because I am stupid, YES STUPID! I forgot my toiletries and had to do some shopping last night. I found a big-ol Walmart off the main highway and did some shopping. Got a few things I probably should not have, but also got the needed necessities.
The drive should have been about an hour from Roanoke to Lynchburg, but with my specialneeds and driving skills, it took over 2 hours to get in town. Now getting to the hotel was not as simple. On the East Coast, they have a highway and a business version of the same freeway number that goes through town. I did the wrong one and ended up touring downtown Lynchburg until I got a call from Charles Billingsley checking up on me.
Thank God Charles knows his way around town! He sat with me on the phone until I was in the parking space at the hotel. I hit the web for a bit and hit the bed. Rehearsal today was cool. I got up really early (for a sax player) and hit the gym and breakfast so I would not be all sleepy from the time change and all.
That was smart, but not needed because when I got to the rehearsal it was decided I didn't need to be there until the horn players joined in at noon, so I had the morning off. I did a little web update back at the hotel for GregVail.com to include sound clips for Smooth Jazz Classics on the actual Sound Clips page. Amazing, I know.
Of course, a new laptop and little time back home meant I did not have the programs loaded to do them right so I had to steal them from CD Baby and post them playing from that server. So, there are audio clips to click on but they are the random clips CD Baby makes until I can create better clips and post them on my server space. They work dang it! hat's the best I could figure to do, given the handicap. I did manage to make use of the morning and get a little nap in before the real rehearsal.
Now, these guys are all really good and the sweetest people too! I really enjoyed the afternoon playing with these guys. We where done by dinner. I took another short nap and ran off to get some food. I found a great BBQ place and ate bad food but loved it. I got a call from my little girl and decided to go looking for a gift for her after eating. Great idea - executed very poorly.
You can see a store across the way, but getting there is very hard, and doing it as it gets dark is even harder. It took a lot long than it should have to get to the store I saw the other side of Liberty. It took 3 to 4 times longer to get home in the dark. Not to fear, I am posting so I did make it back, but dang it was hard, and I could not tell you how I did if my life depended on it. Awe the beauty of a car with XM, but not even a compass, less to say navigation or a map or directions...
I have really enjoyed the scenery and have seen a lot of it so far due to my expeditions across and thru Lynchburg VA.
So, now it is a web moment and soon to bed since i have an early morning and am on LA time so it will come very early indeed.
Tomorrow I play the regular Church services in the morning and then run over to the football stadium for sound check for the Celebrate America festival, concert and fireworks show that is said to be the biggest in the state!!
Hope you-all have a great weekend!
