Smooth Jazz CD Update
I finished the 5 sax parts on Biggest Part of Me and it sounds great! This track has moved to my favorite spot. I then tracked the sax lead on Tenor and brought the drive over to Tony's house to upload the files to his system and it worked! The new version of ProTools allows you to transfer files from PC to MAC and back with any drive. We had to test it and it worked very nicely.
The sax lead had some distortion and compression on it. The wave form didn't show any clipping but I found out that you can't push ProTools to close to clipping because it will compress to keep from clipping. The distortion was created with the mic pre. I am using a UA Solo 610 and found that the Tenor was pushing the tube too hard and distorting. I rerecorded the Tenor at a lower overall level and with the tube Gain down a bit on the preamp and I got a very nice Tenor track that day.
It's a lot of saxes but sounds really great!
On the Gospel CD I'm working on with Bobby Cruz, we got the arrangement done for How Great Thou Art and are working on getting it sequenced. The changes are really interesting and it feels great. Can't wait to get some Sax on it to hear it come together.
The next track on the list is Amazing Grace. I know it has been done a million times but the truth of the matter is, it is amazing grace! I'm excited about this track because I have hopes of featuring my son on it playing fretless bass. Ben has long since mastered the bass on Victor Wooten's Amazing Grace and I want to have him do his version of the harmonics melody thang, but with some fat strings around him. It will be an intro and outro vibe with the tune grooving to loops. Very cool and I can't wait to get it together. I will have Ben track the bass first and then wrap the strings around it. Bobby and I will be working on the groove section in the meantime and when it's done - ya!
Now that Bobby and I are working with loops, we will be going back thru all the finished tracks and making some groove adjustments or deciding wether or not we need to replace it with real drums. I'd love to have real everything since it is real. But, it looks like it will be just a few tracks that really NEED the human touch.
Back to work. I just wanted to get a quick update out. Thanks to those who have given their opinions on tracks, sound and arrangements thus far. I'm very excited to be getting some great new music out again soon!
