The Classic Smooth CD
Tony and I got together last Friday to work on writing an original song for the project and I really like it. I don't know how it fits with what we have done right now, but it could fit in great depending on the direction of the next few tunes.
I finished tracking Alto today on #3 and have #4 to track to have 4 done. #5 is the new original at this point, which needs an arrangement to be ready for me to track sax on. Traditionaly, 5-6 tracks is the half way point, so this thing is moving forward at a good rate and should be done in a couple of months.
The Hymns CD is not really moving anywhere right now, but we have been trying and will get it finished later this year - maybe November for my birthday.

On the recording process -
I did break down and buy a new mic preamp last week and yesterday was the first I got to playwith it. It is the UA solo 610 - single channel, tube pre and DI. It has been interesting playing with the gain and various levels of tube tone and dirt on the Alto Sax. It does bring an anolog sound to a digital recording. It seems to add some grit and color to the sound and the added gain really brings the tone out of the mic. My recording mic of choice is the AEA R84 Ribbon mic. It sounds great on every mic pre, but sounds best when it has some juice to push it. I had been tracking with just the pre's in the M Box and it sounded fine, but I knew it should be fuller. The pre gives it a bump and the overall sound is exceptional.
I also tracked the Alto with my 2 different mouthpieces. The Meyer 6M yesterday and the Guardala BeBop Gold Traditional today. I had been favoring the Meyer as of late, but the recording was all Guardala. The sound was more complex and fuller overall, highs and lows. I might be writing an article with the 2 different clips to discuss tone and personal choice, since I'll bet some will prefer the Meyer's sound and I didn't.
Well, that's it for now. Gotta get back to the recording before I head out to a little club gig tonight.
