Drums, Brass and Organ
I have been working hard on this new track trying to get it done, or at least more done before Easter. The Old Rugged Cross is a true standard in the Easter vein and I felt the inspiration of the season would, and has really made it a special track for when this CD is all finished and released.
Drum edits have been a big issue since last posting. I have worked and reworked drum fills and mixes and finally feel like the drums are 80% there. It is hard to get a natural feel and sound with the unnatural computer. Wish I had a real budget, but maybe next time. :-)>
I then started working Brass parts this week. The vibe is great. The performance, sounds and mix needs work. I like the vibe - meaning when and what I am going for. The vibe is Steely Dan horns and with this track, there is no audible connection to anyone but me and I love it so far.
I played it for a friend tonight and she made a few suggestions that I will give attention to tomorrow. The idea is to track midi Trumpet and Trombone and then have myself and a sax player friend add a real feel with real saxes on top. I have done this in the studio before, trying to make midi Brass sound more real and it works pretty nicely.
I started adding Bone to the Trumpets and can tell it will be great once I get it all assembled.
Another issue was how the horns would work around the melody and I took a few minutes scratching out a lead reference track today. It was of great help because the horn parts are totally in the way on the melody line but work great on the fills and breaks. I would have had them done if I hadn't found the problems, which means they would not have been done at all. So, the next session will be rewriting the Brass around the head melody and then filling it out with Bones before we start adding Audio.
Bobby is in Hawaii right now but said he would be working on the tracks. ...a bit hard to believe for me too. Easter starts tomorrow for me with 2 services and then 9 more over Saturday and Sunday so time will be an issue again.
We are learning as we go here. I decided to log or Blog it for help to others that might be interested in creating a home project. I know I would have been thru every post if I had found something like this online. The process is so important and will be laid out, day after day right here.
Happy Easter, if I don't get back on the Blog till after!
Blessings,
SAXBOY Greg
